PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST
A Physical Fitness Test is required for registration, annual renewal and upgrading for the referee classes shown. The test can be administered by designated United States Soccer Federation Instructors. A document signed by the individual conducting the test is required. Fitness tests must be taken within a six-month period preceding the start of a new season or the date of registration.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR PHYSICAL FITNESS EXAMINATION
Same Day: Test must be conducted on the same day. Fifteen minutes between events is recommended.
Staggered Run: The examiner should designate and mark a starting point and then place easily visible markers along a line, spaced 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 meters respectively, from the starting point. In the staggered run, the referee must run from the starting point to the 5 meter mark and back to the starting point, then to the 10 meter mark and back, then to the 15 meter mark and back, then to the 20 meter mark and back, and finally to the 25 meter mark and back to the starting point. The total time from the beginning starting point to the final return to the starting time is the time of the "staggered run". The run should be conducted on a surface having good traction, such as waxed gym floor, clean concrete, clean asphalt, or soft dry grass.
Shuttle Run: The examiner should designate and mark a starting point and then place an easily visible marker 10 meters from the starting point. In the shuttle run, the referee must run from the starting point to the marker and back to the starting point, and then again to the marker and back to the starting point (4 X 10 meters). The total time from the starting point to the final return to the starting point is the time of the "shuttle run".
Agility Run: The examiner should designate and mark a starting point and then place an easily visible marker 10 meters away. In the agility run, the referee begins at the starting marker and sidesteps right to the other marker 10 meters, then runs backwards 10 meters back to the starting marker, then sidesteps left 10 meters to the other marker, and then runs forward 10 meters to the original marker. These four lengths are then repeated in the sequence described for a total of eight lengths. The total time from the beginning starting point through the repeat sequence is the time of the "agility run". Referees should be cautioned to lift their feet when running backwards to avoid injury.
